Which is better for a kid or student?

The new iPad 9th Gen. A fresh battery, a warranty and no cosmetic damage matter more for daily school use than the used unit's slightly better rear camera.

Is the used iPad 9 worth it over the new one?

Only at a clear discount. The new 64 GB Wi-Fi model is $156.18 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, so a Fair-grade used unit should come in well below that to offset the missing warranty and unknown battery.

Do they perform the same?

Yes. Both use the A13 Bionic with 3 GB RAM and the same 10.2 in 2160 x 1620 display, so apps, games and video run about the same on each.

The new one, almost always. Its battery has no charge cycles yet, while the used unit's 8557 mAh cell has unknown wear and may need a replacement.

Does the used one work with Apple Pencil and keyboards?

Yes. It is the same iPad 9 body, so it takes the Apple Pencil (1st gen) and Smart Keyboard, same as the new model.

What about the cameras?

The used listing shows a 12 MP rear camera versus 8 MP on the new model. The new model's 12 MP front camera adds Center Stage, which the used unit's front camera does not list.
