Questions and answers
- Are these two the same planer?
- Yes. Both are the DeWalt DW735X 13-inch thickness planer with the 15 amp motor and three-knife cutterhead. Buy the cheaper listing from a reputable seller.
- Which is better for a small shop?
- Either one. The DW735X handles 13-inch stock and 6-inch depth, which covers most furniture and trim work. It weighs 92 lbs, so plan a stand.
- How long do the knives last?
- DeWalt rates the three-knife cutterhead for about 30% longer knife life than its two-knife design. Real life depends on how much hardwood and dirty lumber you run.
- Is it worth the extra over a benchtop planer?
- Yes if you plane wide boards often. The 15 amp motor and two feed speeds handle wider, deeper cuts than most lunchbox planers. For occasional light use, a cheaper benchtop model may be enough.
- What problems do owners report?
- Some report shaking and clanking after about three years, cutterheads off side to side out of the box, and knives arriving dinged. Inspect the machine on arrival and check the cutterhead alignment.
