Is the K400 worth it over a cheaper blender?

If you crush ice or make smoothies most days, the 1,200-watt motor and presets do the work a basic blender struggles with. For occasional light blending, a cheaper model is enough.

How does it compare with the Vitamix or Ninja?

It sits between them: more control and better looks than most Ninja models, less power and fewer programs than a Vitamix. It lacks hot-soup and grain settings.

Can it crush ice without liquid?

Yes, the Ice Crush preset is built for it, but run it in short pulses and don't overfill. Hard, dry loads stress the blade, which some owners report damaging.

What comes in the box?

A 56 oz BPA-free blender jar and a lid. The 6-oz Small Batch Jar and 16-oz Personal Blender Jar are sold separately.

Some owners report leakage at the blade assembly. Check the base is tightened and the gasket seated, and don't fill past the max line.

KitchenAid blenders typically drop during Black Friday and end-of-season kitchen sales. Watch the price history rather than buying at list.

About the KitchenAid K400 Variable Speed Blender

The KitchenAid K400 is a 1,200-watt countertop blender with a 5-speed variable dial and three preset programs: Ice Crush, Icy Drink and Smoothie. Its 3-part blending system pairs a ribbed 56 oz BPA-free jar with an asymmetric blade, and Intelli-Speed control adjusts motor speed to what is in the jar. Soft Start ramps up slowly to stop splatter. It is a mid-range blender aimed at smoothie and ice work rather than heavy hot-soup or grain grinding.
