About the Astercook 6-Piece Kitchen Knife Set with Block

The Astercook 6-Piece Kitchen Knife Set is a budget starter set: a 7-inch Santoku, 8-inch chef's knife, 8-inch slicer, 5-inch utility knife, kitchen shears and a compact round block. Blades are high-carbon 3Cr13 stainless steel with a nonstick-style coating, and the wood-grain PP handles are shaped for a softer grip. It is a light-duty set, not forged kitchen hardware. The latest best price of $18.89 (October 30) sits at the bottom of its short recent range of $18.89 to $22.99.

Thin stamped blades, not forged; edge retention is modest
  • Coating can wear or chip with hard use or dishwashing
  • No bread knife or paring knife in the six pieces
  • Block is compact, so adding knives later is limited
  • Hand wash recommended to protect coating and handles

    • What reviewers say

With 4.4 out of 5 from 96 ratings, owners treat this as good value for the money rather than a serious knife set. Most praise the price, the look and out-of-box sharpness; complaints center on durability and the coating.

    Pros
    • Good value for a full set with block
    • Sharp enough out of the box
    • Attractive beige finish on the counter
    • Handles feel comfortable in the hand
    Cons
    • Blades dull faster than expected
    • Coating and handles can degrade with dishwasher use
    • Block feels light and plasticky
    • Shears are the weakest piece

    Questions and answers

Is the Astercook 6-piece set worth it?
For $18.89 to $22.99 it is a reasonable starter set for light cooking. If you chop daily or want knives that last years, spend more on forged blades.
Can these knives go in the dishwasher?
Hand washing is the safer choice. Dishwasher heat and detergent can dull the edge and break down the blade coating and PP handles.
    What knives are included?
You get a 7-inch Santoku, 8-inch chef's knife, 8-inch slicing knife, 5-inch utility knife, kitchen shears and the round block. There is no paring or bread knife.
How does it compare with a forged knife set?
These are thin stamped 3Cr13 blades, so they are lighter and cheaper but lose their edge sooner. A forged set costs several times more and holds an edge longer.
    When is the price lowest?
The recent low was $18.89 on October 30, against a high of $22.99 on November 2. Waiting for a drop back toward $19 is reasonable.
Does the block fit other knives?
The block is compact and slotted for this set. Adding extra knives, especially wide ones, will be tight.
