About the Asus ROG Strix G16 16" WUXGA 165Hz Gaming Laptop AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX

The ROG Strix G16 is Asus's mainstream 16-inch gaming laptop, here in a configuration with an AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX, a 2560 x 1600 165Hz display, an NVIDIA GPU, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. It weighs about 5.5 lb, so it is a desk-and-backpack machine rather than an ultraportable. At $1,609.97 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it sits at the low end of what this spec level has cost recently, with three stores listing it new.

Pros
  • Ryzen 9 9955HX gives desktop-class multi-core speed for gaming, streaming and compiling
  • 2560 x 1600 at 165Hz is sharp and smooth for both games and text work

  • About 5.5 lb is reasonable for a 16-inch gaming laptop
  • Price is at the bottom of its recent range

Cons
  • 16GB of RAM is the minimum for heavy multitasking in 2026; some games and creative apps want 32GB
  • The listing does not name the exact NVIDIA GPU, so check the model before buying
  • 5.5 lb plus a power brick is heavy for daily carrying
  • 16-inch gaming laptops rarely last long on battery away from a wall outlet

What reviewers say

The G16 line is generally well rated by owners, who like the screen, the performance per dollar and the build for the price. Complaints tend to focus on fan noise under load, battery life and the amount of bloatware.

Pros
  • Smooth 165Hz display
  • Strong CPU performance for the price
  • Solid build quality for a mainstream gaming laptop
Cons
  • Fans get loud in performance modes
  • Short battery life unplugged
  • Preinstalled software needs cleaning up

Questions and answers

Is the Ryzen 9 9955HX worth it over a cheaper Ryzen 7 model?
If you game only, a Ryzen 7 model will feel similar in most titles. The 9955HX pays off in streaming, video editing and compiling, where its extra cores cut render and export times.
Which NVIDIA GPU does this configuration have?
The listing only says "NVIDIA GPU." Ask the seller for the exact model (for example RTX 5060 or 5070) before buying, since it changes gaming performance more than anything else here.
Can I upgrade the RAM and storage?
Yes. The G16 has accessible SO-DIMM slots and a second M.2 slot on most configurations, so adding a 16GB stick and a second SSD is a straightforward upgrade.
Is 16GB of RAM enough for gaming?
For most current games at 1600p, yes. If you keep many browser tabs open while playing, or use the laptop for video editing, plan on upgrading to 32GB.
Is $1,609.97 a good price?
It is at the low end of this laptop's recent range, with three stores listing it new as of November 4, 2026. Waiting for a holiday sale could save more, but the current price is not inflated.
What comes in the box?
The laptop, its power adapter and the usual paperwork. It does not include a mouse or a gaming headset.
