Our take on the Body-Solid Tools Adjustable Dumbbells

The Body-Solid Tools Adjustable Dumbbells are a 100 lb cast-iron set built on two 14-inch threaded handles with spin-lock collars. Plates are 5 lb each, so you change load in 5 lb steps per dumbbell, and the knurled 1-inch grips are sized for standard plate loading. At $199 at portlandfitnessequipment.com as of November 3, 2026, the set sits at the low end of its recent range, with three stores pricing it new. It is a basic, durable plate-loading set rather than a fast-dial selector design.

Best forHome lifters who want one set for presses, rows and curlsBuyers who prefer cast iron over plastic selector dumbbellsGarages or commercial floors where gear gets dropped and sharedLifters adding to an existing standard 1-inch plate collection
Pros
  • Cast iron plates and steel handles hold up to hard use
  • 5 lb increments give finer jumps than many fixed dumbbells
  • Spin-lock collars keep plates tight and are easy to replace
  • Knurled 1-inch grips resist slipping during heavy sets
  • 100 lb total covers a wide range for most home lifters
Cons
  • Changing weight means unscrewing collars and swapping plates
  • Long 14-inch handles limit range on some lifts and feel bulky
  • 5 lb plates mean big jumps once you pass the plate supply
  • No stand or storage rack included
  • Threaded sleeves can loosen slightly during fast reps

Questions and answers

Is $199 a good price for this set?
At $199 at portlandfitnessequipment.com as of November 3, 2026, it is the lowest of the three new prices we track. That puts it at the low end of its recent range, so it is a reasonable time to buy.
How much weight can each dumbbell hold?
The set totals 100 lb across two handles, so each dumbbell can be loaded to roughly 50 lb including the handle and collars. Plates are 5 lb each, so you add weight in 5 lb steps per dumbbell.
How does it compare with dial-adjustable dumbbells?
Dial and selector dumbbells change weight in seconds but cost more and have more parts to break. This set is slower to adjust but cheaper, all cast iron, and easy to repair.
Do the handles fit standard plates?
Yes. The 1-inch diameter handles and 4.25-inch sleeves take standard 1-inch plates, so you can add plates you already own. Olympic 2-inch plates will not fit.
What comes in the box?
You get two threaded 14-inch handles with spin-lock collars and the 5 lb plates that make up the 100 lb total. No stand or rack is included.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on cast-iron sets move with shipping weight and seasonal sales, often around New Year and Black Friday. Watch the three stores we track and buy when the gap to the next price widens.
Where is the Body-Solid Tools Adjustable Dumbbells cheapest?
