Questions and answers

Is it worth $31.99?
Yes if you want a full-size, dimmable lava lamp at a low price. At $31.99 at Surprise Castle as of November 3, 2026, it costs less than most 16-inch lava lamps, though the incandescent bulb adds running cost.
How long does it take to warm up?
Expect roughly one to three hours for the wax to soften and start flowing. Cool rooms slow this down, so keep it away from drafts.
Can I use a different bulb?
Stick with a 25-watt incandescent bulb of the same shape. An LED or higher-wattage bulb will not produce enough heat for the wax to flow and may overheat the lamp.
How big is it?
It is 16.5 inches tall and 4 inches wide, so it fits on a nightstand or shelf but needs a few inches of clearance above for heat.
Does it need to be plugged in?
Yes. It has a corded electric plug for a standard 120-volt US outlet and no battery option.

Lava lamps usually drop during holiday sales and back-to-school promotions. Track the price history here and buy when it falls below the recent range.
