Our take on the Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle

The Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle pairs the standard Switch console with a download code for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, one of the platform's best-selling games. The console works as a home system docked to a TV and as a handheld with a 6.2-inch 720p touchscreen, and the two Joy-Con controllers can be split for two-player play out of the box. Battery life runs about 4.5 to 9 hours depending on the game. The latest best price is $299.99 at J2Games.com as of November 3, which is the standard list price for this bundle and within its usual range.

Questions and answers

Is this bundle worth it over buying the console alone?
Yes, if you want Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The bundle typically costs the same as the standalone console, so the game is effectively free. If you already own the game or prefer a different title, a console-only or OLED model may suit you better.
How does this compare to the Switch OLED model?
The OLED model has a 7-inch OLED screen, double the internal storage (64GB), a wider kickstand and better speakers. This bundle uses the older 6.2-inch LCD and 32GB storage. Choose this one for the included game and lower price; choose OLED for the better handheld screen.
What is the battery life?
Nintendo rates it at approximately 4.5 to 9 hours. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom run closer to 4.5 hours, while lighter titles last closer to 9. It charges via USB-C with the included AC adapter.
What comes in the box?
The box includes the Switch console, dock, left and right Joy-Con, HDMI cable, AC adapter and a download code for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. A Joy-Con grip and wrist straps are also included.
Can I play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with more than two players?
Yes. The bundle supports up to four players locally on one TV when you add extra Joy-Con or Pro Controllers. Up to eight consoles can link for local wireless play, and online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
When is the best time to buy this bundle?
It rarely drops below its $299.99 list price, but discounts appear around Black Friday, Cyber Monday and occasional retailer promotions. The lowest prices we have seen are in the $269 to $299 range during holiday sales.
