Our take on the Vortex Lava Lamp

The Vortex Lava Lamp is a 10.5-inch battery-powered tabletop lamp with a black plastic base and cap and a globe that glows with color-changing silver glitter light. It runs on AA batteries through an on/off switch and is marketed as a non-heat alternative to classic lava lamps, aimed at kids. At $17.73 at DeepDiscount.com as of November 5, 2026, it is the only new price listed, so there is no recent range to compare against. Its 2.1 out of 5 rating from 13 ratings is a warning sign for buyers expecting the flowing-wax look of a real lava lamp.

Questions and answers

Is this a real lava lamp with flowing wax?
No. It is a battery LED lamp with a silver glitter effect in a plastic globe. It does not have the heated wax motion of a classic lava lamp.
Does it need to be plugged in?
No. It runs on AA batteries and has an on/off switch, so it can sit anywhere on a table or shelf.
How big is it?
It is 10.5 inches tall and 3 inches wide, small enough for a nightstand or desk.
Is it safe for a kid's room?
It uses LEDs and is marketed as a non-heat alternative, so it avoids the hot bulb and wax of a classic lava lamp. It is still a plastic lamp, not a toy.
Is $17.73 a good price?
