- Which one fits my furnace?
- They are different sizes. The HCY is 20x20x1 and the Aircare is 20x25x1. Measure your slot and buy the one that matches; neither will fit the other's opening.
- Which filters better?
- Both are MERV 8, so they capture similar particle sizes. Aircare states capture down to 1 micron and up to 94% of dust and allergens. The HCY lists dust removal at MERV 8 without a percentage claim.
- Is the Aircare worth the extra $1.60?
- At $32.19 at Walmart versus $30.59 at Amazon for the HCY, the gap is small. The Aircare adds a rigid galvanized frame, a stated size tolerance and 495 owner ratings, which is worth it if it fits.
- How often do I wash them?
- Plan on rinsing every 1 to 3 months, more often with pets or heavy dust. Wash from the clean side, let it dry fully, and reinstall. A clogged filter raises static pressure and strains the blower.
- Will a MERV 8 filter handle allergies?
- It helps with dust, pollen and pet dander but not the finest smoke or virus particles. If allergies are severe, a MERV 11 to 13 filter captures more, at the cost of more airflow resistance.
- Do these last longer than disposable filters?
- Yes. Both are washable and reusable for years, replacing 1-inch disposables changed every 1 to 3 months. The Aircare's galvanized frame is the sturdier of the two for repeated washing.
