Which is better for accurate rain measurement?

The Tempest's haptic sensor avoids the clogs and tipping errors of cups, and its rainfall accuracy is rated well. The Iris uses a self-emptying tipping bucket, which is reliable but can clog with debris.

The Iris has a long track record, with buyers reporting units running 10 years, but its cups and bucket wear and it needs batteries. The Tempest has no moving parts and solar power, so less to replace, though its haptic sensor is newer.

Is the Tempest worth the extra money?

Only if you want real-time app data, no moving parts, solar power and lightning alerts. If you mainly want readings on a display in your house, the Iris does that for about $174 less.

Do I need a phone to use the Tempest?

Yes. The Tempest has no indoor display; all readings go through Wi-Fi to the app. The Iris shows everything on its color console.

Which handles high winds better?

The Iris is rated to withstand and measure winds up to 99 mph. The Tempest's ultrasonic wind readings can be affected at high speeds.

Which is easier to set up?

Both mount outdoors on a pole. The Iris also needs its sensor paired to the indoor display, while the Tempest connects to Wi-Fi and the app.
