What reviewers say
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX
Owner discussion centers on the platform cost rather than the chip itself: the 7985WX is fast in rendering and simulation, but the board, memory and cooling add a lot on top of the price.
- PerformancePraisedOwners report big gains in rendering and simulation over 32-core parts.
- Platform costCriticisedWRX90 boards and 8-channel memory push total build cost well past the CPU price.
- Power and heatCriticisedThe 350 W TDP needs a large cooler and a case with strong airflow.

Questions and answers
- Which is faster for rendering?
- The 7985WX. Its Zen 4 cores run at 3.2 GHz base and 5.1 GHz boost versus 2.7 GHz and 4.2 GHz on the 3995WX, so it wins on both single-thread and multi-thread work despite the same core count.
- Can I reuse my sWRX8 motherboard with the 7985WX?
- No. The 7985WX uses Socket sTR5 and needs a WRX90 board. The 3995WX uses Socket sWRX8 and will not fit sTR5 boards either.
- Does the 3995WX support more memory?
- Both are eight-channel. The 3995WX uses DDR4-3200 ECC, and the 7985WX uses DDR5. Check the motherboard's validated memory list, since listed capacity limits vary by board.
- Is the 7985WX worth the extra cost?
- For new builds, yes. You get PCIe 5.0, DDR5 and much higher clocks. If you already own an sWRX8 board and DDR4 memory, the 3995WX can be the cheaper path.
- Which runs cooler?
- The 3995WX has a 280 W TDP versus 350 W for the 7985WX, so it is easier to cool. Both need a large sTRX/sTR5-class cooler.
- Do either have integrated graphics?
- No. Both are CPU-only and need a discrete GPU.
