Questions and answers
- Which is better for a PS5?
- The Crucial T500, because it ships with a heatsink, which the PS5 needs, and it is cheaper. The SN850X works in a PS5 only if you add a heatsink.
- Is the WD Black SN850X worth the extra $130?
- Only if you value Game Mode load prediction and the five-year warranty. The T500 is faster on rated speeds and costs less.
- Which lasts longer?
- The T500 is rated at 2,400 TBW, which is high for a 4TB drive. WD does not state an endurance figure for the SN850X in this listing, so a direct comparison is not possible.
- Which is faster in games?
- Both are PCIe 4.0 drives and load games within a second of each other. Crucial claims the T500 loads games 16% faster than PCIe 3.0 drives; WD's edge is its Game Mode software, not raw speed.
- Do both fit a laptop?
- Both are M.2 2280 drives. The T500's heatsink may be too tall for some thin laptops, so check clearance or buy a heatsink-free version.
- Which has a DRAM cache?
- Both. The T500 lists DRAM cache, and the SN850X is a DRAM-based drive, which helps sustained writes.
