Which is better for a beginner?

The adjustable pair. It starts at 2.5 lb per hand and lets you add load as you get stronger. The Garvee set is stuck at 12 lb.

Is the Garvee set worth it over the adjustable pair?

If you only need 12 lb dumbbells, yes. It is $46.98 versus $89.99 and has nothing to adjust or break.

The fixed Garvee set has fewer parts, so less to fail. The adjustable set's mechanism is the part to watch over years of use.

Can I do a full workout with 12.5 lb per hand?

For light upper-body work and rehab, yes. For squats, rows or presses once you are past beginner level, both sets will be too light.

Which takes less space?

The adjustable pair. It covers five weights in one dumbbell of about 295 x 280 x 115 mm, where five fixed pairs would fill a rack.
