Which is better for storm season?

The Voyager V2. It adds 7 NOAA weather channels, a siren, and an SOS beacon, which the V1R lacks.

Is the V2 worth $5 more than the V1R?

Yes for most buyers. The extra $5 buys weather alerts, a phone charger, and emergency lights. Skip it only if you just want AM/FM/shortwave.

Which one charges a phone?

Both list a cell phone charger, but the V2 clearly states a 5V USB output for iOS and Android. Treat phone charging as a short top-up, not a full recharge.

Which is lighter to carry?

The V1R at 8.2 oz versus 10.2 oz for the V2. Both are pocket-size at about 5.2 x 1.8 x 2.5 inches.

Do either need batteries to work?

No. Both run on a hand crank and solar panel, and both take 3 AAA batteries as a backup. The V2 also has a replaceable 600 mAh NiMH pack.

Which has better reception?

Both are analog tuners on AM, FM, and shortwave. The V2 adds a 14-inch telescopic antenna and weather band, so it covers more signals.
