Which is better for a kid's bedroom?

The Schylling is the better bedroom lamp: it is 14.5 inches tall, plugs into the wall and gives soft ambient light. The Volcano is smaller and USB-powered, so it suits a desk or shelf more than a whole room.

Is the Volcano Magma Lamp worth it over the Schylling?

Only if you want a cheap, small novelty. At $12.50 at Walmart as of November 5, 2026, it costs about a third of the Schylling's $36.99 at The Sky's The Limit, but you get a roughly 9-inch USB lamp instead of a full-size plug-in lava lamp.

Which one lasts longer?

The Schylling has the sturdier build on paper: an aluminum base and cap, a glass globe and a replaceable 25W bulb. The Volcano's materials and bulb are not specified, so its lifespan is harder to judge.

Do both need to be plugged in?

Yes, but differently. The Schylling uses a wall outlet and a 25W appliance bulb. The Volcano runs on USB, so it can draw power from a laptop or power bank.

Which gives off more light?

The Schylling. Its 25W bulb lights a 14.5-inch glass globe and is meant as soft room light. The Volcano is a small USB novelty with a fiery effect, not room lighting.
