Which is better for gaming?

The SN850X. Its PCIe 4.0 interface and DirectStorage support cut load times in a way a SATA drive cannot match.

The Red SA500 is built for 24/7 NAS use, so it suits always-on systems better. The SN850X is a consumer gaming drive with no NAS endurance rating.

Is the SN850X worth the extra cost?

If your board has a PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot, yes. The speed gap over SATA is large for games and large files. If you only have SATA, the SN850X will not fit.

Can I use the Red SA500 in a laptop?

Only if the laptop's M.2 slot supports SATA. Many modern laptops accept NVMe only, so check the slot before buying.

Do either come with a heatsink?

The SN850X offers an optional heatsink on the 1TB and 2TB versions. The Red SA500 has no heatsink option.

Which has more capacity choices?

The SN850X, at 1TB, 2TB and 4TB. The Red SA500 tops out at 2TB.
