Our take on the 24 in. x 1 in. x 48 in. R5 Radiant Acoustic Insulation Kit

This is a 12-panel kit of 1-inch expanded polystyrene foam board faced with reflective film, sized 2 ft by 4 ft for 96 sq ft of coverage. It does two jobs at once: an R5 thermal layer and sound absorption for walls, ceilings, floors and roofs. The silver film acts as a vapor retarder and the board is mold, mildew and water resistant. At $65.76 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it is the lowest new price tracked, with only two stores listing it new.

Pros

  • Reflective film adds a vapor retarder
  • Mold, mildew and water resistant
  • Thin 1-inch profile fits behind drywall and in tight bays
  • Lightweight and simple to handle solo
Cons
  • STC 19 is modest; it will not soundproof a room on its own
  • EPS foam is flammable and needs a code-approved covering
  • Silver film shows seams and needs taping
  • R5 is low compared with fiberglass batts

Questions and answers

Is this kit worth it for soundproofing a room?
It helps with echo and mid-range noise, but STC 19 is low. For real soundproofing, pair it with mass-loaded vinyl or a second drywall layer.
How much area does one kit cover?
96 sq ft, from twelve 2 ft by 4 ft panels. That covers a typical two-car garage door with some left over.
Can it go behind drywall?
Yes, it is commonly used behind drywall on walls and ceilings. Check local code for a fire-rated covering over the foam.
Does it work outdoors?
The board is water resistant and rated for outdoor use, but the reflective film should be protected from long direct sun and rain.
When is it cheapest?
The best new price tracked is $65.76 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026. Only two stores list it new, so compare both before buying.
