Is this set worth it for a beginner?

Yes. At 72 colors for a low price, it covers the basics for learning to shade and blend without a big outlay. Serious artists will outgrow it quickly.

How does it compare with artist-grade pencils like Prismacolor?

The Artists Loft cores are harder and less pigmented, so layering and blending take more effort. Prismacolor Premier pencils cost several times more but give richer, smoother color.

Are the pencils pre-sharpened?

Yes, the set comes pre-sharpened and ready to use. The soft cores dull quickly, so keep a sharpener handy.

What are the case dimensions?

The case measures about 8.26 by 1 by 7.1 inches, so it fits in a backpack or desk drawer.

When is this set cheapest?

Michaels runs frequent store-wide coupons and back-to-school sales, which are the usual times this set drops below its list price. Check the price history before buying.

Our take on the 72 Assorted Colored Pencils

The Artists Loft 72 Assorted Colored Pencils is a budget set aimed at beginners, students and casual colorers. It offers 72 pre-sharpened colors in a flat tin-style case measuring about 8.26 by 7.1 inches. It is a Michaels house brand, so it is sold mainly through that one retailer and rarely discounted deeply. At 4.4 out of 5 from 418 ratings, it is well liked for the price but not a serious artist-grade pencil.
