Our take on the ACMER K1 7W Laser Engraver

The ACMER K1 is a compact desktop laser engraver sold in 2.5W, 3.5W, 7W and 12W versions, all sharing a 150 x 150 mm work area. The 7W version is the middle-high option: enough power to cut thin basswood and dark acrylic and to engrave wood, leather, cardboard and coated metal, but not a machine for thick stock or bare stainless. Its small footprint (about 286 x 273 x 190 mm) suits a desk or workbench. The 7W sits above the entry 2.5W and 3.5W units and below the 12W, so it is the balanced pick for hobby work rather than production cutting.

Questions and answers

Is the 7W version worth it over the 2.5W or 3.5W?
Yes, if you want to cut thin wood and dark acrylic rather than only engrave. The 2.5W and 3.5W models are best for surface marking; the 7W gives noticeably more cutting depth on light materials.
What can the 7W laser actually cut?
It cuts thin basswood and plywood (roughly 2–3 mm in a few passes), dark or black acrylic, cardboard, paper and leather. It will not cut clear acrylic, thick hardwood or metal.
How big is the engraving area?
150 x 150 mm (about 5.9 x 5.9 inches) on every K1 version. Anything larger needs to be engraved in sections or the design scaled down.
Does it come with an enclosure or safety glasses?
The K1 is an open-frame machine, so plan on laser safety glasses and a ventilated space. Check the box contents for your bundle; enclosures are usually sold separately.
What software does the ACMER K1 use?
It works with common diode-laser software such as LaserGRBL and LightBurn over USB. LightBurn is paid but gives better control of power and speed.
When is the K1 cheapest?
Diode laser prices tend to dip during major sales events and when a newer model launches. Compare the 7W price across stores before buying rather than assuming the list price is fixed.
