Our take on the Alecto WS-1700 Weather Station

The Alecto WS-1700 is a battery-powered home weather station that measures indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity and barometric pressure, then shows a short-range forecast on a large LCD with clock and date. It logs readings and has an alarm, but it has no wind or rain sensors, so it is a basic temperature-and-humidity station rather than a full weather suite. The outdoor sensor is RF-linked and rated for outdoor mounting. It suits someone who wants a simple indoor/outdoor thermometer with a forecast icon, not an anemometer or rain gauge.

Questions and answers

Is the Alecto WS-1700 worth it?
It is a reasonable pick if you only want indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity and a pressure-based forecast on a big display. If you need wind or rain data, spend more on a station with those sensors.
Does it measure wind or rain?
No. The WS-1700 has temperature, humidity and barometric pressure sensors only. There is no anemometer, wind vane or rain gauge.
How is the outdoor sensor connected?
The outdoor sensor talks to the display over a wireless RF link, so no cable is needed. It is battery powered and rated for outdoor mounting.
Can I switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit?
Yes. The display supports both Celsius and Fahrenheit, so you can change units to match your preference.
What comes in the box?
You get the display unit and the wireless outdoor temperature and humidity sensor. Batteries are typically not included, so check before buying.
When is it cheapest?
Weather stations like this usually drop around seasonal sales and back-to-school or winter promotions. Compare current store prices and the price history before buying.
