Our take on the Altra Men's Timp 5 Hiker GTX Hiking Boots

The Altra Timp 5 Hiker GTX is a waterproof over-the-ankle hiking boot built on Altra's zero-drop, foot-shaped last. It pairs a GORE-TEX ePE membrane with Altra EGO MAX foam and a Vibram Megagrip outsole, and at 1 lb. 8.2 oz per pair it is unusually light for a waterproof hiker. Its 3.5 out of 5 from 167 ratings puts owner satisfaction in middling territory.

Questions and answers

Is the Altra Timp 5 Hiker GTX worth it?: It is a strong pick if you already like Altra's zero-drop, wide fit and want a light waterproof hiker. If you need a stiff, heavy-duty boot for rough terrain, look elsewhere.
How does it compare to the non-GTX Timp?: The GTX version adds a GORE-TEX ePE membrane for waterproofing, at the cost of some breathability and a slightly warmer feel. The non-GTX model is better for dry, hot hikes.
Do these boots have a zero-drop sole?: Yes. Like other Altra shoes, the Timp 5 Hiker GTX has zero drop from heel to toe, so ease into longer hikes if you are used to conventional boots.
How much do they weigh?: The pair weighs 1 lb. 8.2 oz, which is light for a waterproof over-the-ankle boot.
What is in the box?: You get the pair of boots with the stock laces. Insoles and other accessories are not listed.
When is the best time to buy?: Prices on hiking boots tend to dip during end-of-season sales and around major shopping events. Check the price history before buying.
What do buyers say about the Altra Men's Timp 5 Hiker GTX Hiking Boots?: Rated 3.5 out of 5 from 167 ratings.
