Our take on the Amazon Kindle 16GB

The Amazon Kindle 16GB is Amazon's entry-level e-reader with a 6-inch glare-free display, 16GB of storage and a rated six weeks of battery life. It weighs 5.3 oz, so it is light enough to hold one-handed for long reading sessions. The 16GB capacity holds thousands of books, and Amazon says it loads titles about 30 percent faster than earlier models. Its latest best price is $99 at Amazon as of November 3, near the low end of its recent range.

Questions and answers

Is the base Kindle worth it over the Paperwhite?
If you read mostly plain-text novels indoors or on commutes, the base Kindle covers it at a lower price. The Paperwhite adds a larger screen, warm lighting and waterproofing, which matter for night readers and bath or beach use.
How much storage do I need?
16GB is plenty for most readers; a typical ebook is a few MB, so thousands fit. Only heavy comic, audiobook or PDF users need more.
How long does the battery really last?
Amazon rates up to six weeks based on about 30 minutes of reading a day with wireless off. Heavy readers with brightness up and Wi-Fi on should expect closer to two to three weeks.
Can I read library books on it?
Yes. It works with Libby and other library services through Amazon's Send to Kindle, and Kindle Unlimited titles work directly.
Is it waterproof?
No. The base Kindle is not rated for water resistance, so keep it away from pools and baths; the Paperwhite is the waterproof option.
When is it cheapest?
Entry Kindles typically drop during Prime Day, Black Friday and Amazon device sales. Its latest best price was $99 at Amazon as of November 3, near the low end of its recent range.
