Our take on the Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro M2 Max chip

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Max chip is Apple's high-end compact laptop, built for heavy video, code and 3D work in a 3.6 lb body. It pairs a 3024 x 1964 Liquid Retina XDR display with 32 GB of unified memory, a 512 GB or 1 TB SSD, HDMI, MagSafe charging and Touch ID. Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours. At $1,964 at Macpro-la as of November 8, 2026, it sits well below what this configuration typically sold for new, making it one of the stronger prices seen recently.

32 GB of unified memory is generous for multitasking and heavy apps

Cons

Heavy for its size at 3.6 lb compared with the MacBook Air
Base 512 GB SSD fills fast with video and RAW files; upgrades are expensive
Ports are limited to what Apple includes; no USB-A
Not user-upgradable: memory and storage are fixed at purchase

What people mention

PerformancePraisedOwners say the M2 Max chews through video exports, compiles and renders that bog down older Intel Macs.
DisplayPraisedReviewers highlight the bright, high-contrast Liquid Retina XDR panel and accurate color for photo and video work.
BatteryPraisedUsers report getting through a full workday unplugged, close to Apple's 18-hour claim in light use.
StorageCriticisedBuyers say 512 GB fills quickly with footage and RAW files, and upgrading at purchase is costly.
WeightMixedSome owners find 3.6 lb noticeable in a bag, though most accept it for the power on offer.
PriceCriticisedReviewers call the M2 Max premium steep next to the M2 Pro for buyers who don't need the extra GPU cores.

Questions and answers

Is the M2 Max worth it over the M2 Pro?: Only if you render video, run GPU-heavy 3D or work with very large files. For writing, browsing and light editing, the M2 Pro is cheaper and nearly as fast.
Is 512 GB enough storage?: For documents and light photo work, yes. For video or large RAW libraries, plan on external drives or pay for the 1 TB model, since storage can't be upgraded later.
How long does the battery last?: Apple rates it at up to 18 hours. Real-world mixed use typically lands around 10 to 14 hours, less under sustained rendering.
What's in the box?: The laptop, a 96W USB-C power adapter and a MagSafe 3 charging cable. No external display or mouse is included.
Is $1,964 a good price?: It is well below the original list price for a 32 GB M2 Max configuration, so it is a strong price for this spec as of November 8, 2026.
Can I upgrade the RAM later?: No. Memory is soldered as unified memory, so choose 32 GB or more at purchase if you expect heavy workloads.
Where is the Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro M2 Max chip cheapest?: At Macpro-la, for $1,964.00, 30% under what the other stores charge, as of our latest check.
