Our take on the Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)

The 2018 iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) was the first iPad to drop the home button and Lightning port for Face ID and USB-C. It runs a 2732 x 2048 Liquid Retina display, an A12X Bionic chip, 4G cellular and a 12 MP rear camera, and weighs 22.3 oz. Apple rates the battery at 10 hours. At $390.99 at Walmart as of November 4, 2026, it is the only new price listed, so there is no recent range to compare against; that figure is well below what this model sold for new.

Best for
Large-screen media and drawing on a budget
Students who want a big canvas for notes
Cellular use without a hotspot
Buyers who want USB-C on an older iPad
Pros
  • Big 12.9-inch 2732 x 2048 screen suits split-screen work and sketching
  • A12X chip still handles browsing, video and most apps smoothly
  • USB-C port works with drives, hubs and many cameras
  • Face ID unlocks without a home button
  • Cellular model takes a SIM for data away from Wi-Fi
Cons
  • 2018 hardware: no current iPadOS updates and aging app support
  • No headphone jack
  • Battery is likely degraded on any unit that sat in storage
  • 22.3 oz plus a keyboard case gets heavy to hold
  • Accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2 are sold separately

Questions and answers

Is the 3rd-generation iPad Pro 12.9 still worth buying in 2026?
For media, notes and light work at $390.99, yes, if you accept that it no longer gets the newest iPadOS features. For heavy multitasking or long-term app support, a newer iPad is the safer buy.
Does it work with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard?
It supports the second-generation Apple Pencil, which attaches magnetically to the side to charge. It also works with the Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio made for this 12.9-inch model; neither is included.
How is the battery after all these years?
Apple rates it at 10 hours, but a unit built in 2018 or 2019 may hold less charge now. Ask the seller about battery health or plan for a replacement service.
Is the cellular version unlocked?
This is the 4G model, but carrier lock status varies by unit. Confirm with the seller that it is unlocked before buying if you plan to use another carrier's SIM.
What comes in the box?
Expect the iPad and a USB-C charging cable and power adapter. The Pencil, keyboard and case are separate purchases.
When is it cheapest?
Older iPads tend to drop around back-to-school and Black Friday sales. With only one new listing at $390.99 as of November 4, 2026, compare against refurbished prices before buying.
Where is the Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) cheapest?
At Walmart, for $390.99, as of our latest check.
Where can I buy the Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)?
