Our take on the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch Early 2015 2.7GHz Core i5 16GB RAM 1TB SSD

The Early 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro is Apple's last Retina model with a full set of ports: two USB-A, two Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, SD card slot and MagSafe 2. This configuration pairs a 2.7GHz dual-core Core i5 with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, the top spec of that generation. It is a used, decade-old laptop, so condition and battery wear matter more than the badge. Check the current listing price against recent sold prices for 16GB/1TB units before buying.

  • Runs older macOS well and handles browsing, docs and video
Cons
  • Dual-core 2.7GHz i5 is slow by current standards

Questions and answers

Is the Early 2015 MacBook Pro still worth buying?
Only at a low price and for light use. It handles browsing, documents and streaming fine, but it cannot run macOS past Monterey and gets no security updates.
What macOS version does it run?
macOS Monterey (12) is the last supported release. Older versions like Big Sur and Catalina also work.
Can I replace the battery or SSD?
The SSD is a proprietary Apple part and not a standard M.2 drive, so upgrades are limited. The battery is glued in but replaceable by a repair shop.
Does it have USB-C?
No. It has two USB-A ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot and MagSafe 2 charging.
How does it compare to the 2015 15-inch model?
The 15-inch has a quad-core CPU and optional discrete graphics, so it is faster for editing. The 13-inch is lighter and runs cooler.
What should I check on a used unit?
Ask for battery cycle count and condition, confirm the 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD, and check the screen for delamination or dead pixels.
What do buyers say about the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch Early 2015 2.7GHz Core i5 16GB RAM 1TB SSD?
Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 19,000 ratings.
