Our take on the Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019 Core i9 64GB 8TB

This is the top-spec 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro: an 8-core Intel Core i9 with 64GB of RAM, an 8TB SSD and the Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of video memory. It was the last Intel flagship before Apple moved to its own chips, and it remains a strong machine for heavy video, audio and code work that needs lots of RAM and storage. The 16-inch Retina display (2880 x 1800) and the return of a scissor-switch keyboard are its main draws. The latest best price we have is $159 at Distritech as of November 3, far below what this configuration sold for new, so check that the listing is the exact 64GB/8TB build before buying.

Questions and answers

Is the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro still worth buying?
Yes if you need lots of RAM and internal storage cheaply and run Intel-only software. For most buyers an Apple Silicon Mac is faster, cooler and has better battery life.
How does it compare with the M1 Pro 16-inch?
The M1 Pro is faster in most tasks, runs cooler and lasts longer on battery. The 2019 model wins only on maximum RAM and storage, and on price at this listing.
What is the battery life like?
Apple rated it at about 11 hours of web use, but heavy editing or compiling cuts that to a few hours. Expect the battery to have aged on a used unit.
Does it have an SD card slot?
No. It has four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports and a headphone jack, so you need a hub or adapter for SD cards and USB-A devices.
What comes in the box?
The listing includes the laptop, an 87W USB-C power adapter and a USB-C cable. Nothing else is listed.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on this configuration swing widely because stock is limited. The best price we have is $159 at Distritech as of November 3; compare against other listings before buying.
