Our take on the Apple MacBook Pro Core i5 2.3GHz 8GB RAM 256gb SSD 13 inch Space Gray Mpxt2ll/a

The MacBook Pro MPXT2LL/A is a 2017 13-inch model with a dual-core 2.3GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 2560x1600 Retina display. It has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, a headset jack, a backlit keyboard and Apple's Touch Bar, and weighs about 3 pounds. It is a solid everyday Mac for writing, browsing and light photo work, but it is several generations behind current Apple silicon. The latest best price is $159 at Distritech as of November 3, far below what this machine sold for new and typical of the used market for 2017 Intel Macs.

Questions and answers

Is this MacBook Pro worth buying in 2025?
At $159 at Distritech as of November 3, it is a cheap way into macOS for writing, browsing and light photo editing. It is a poor choice for video editing, heavy multitasking or anyone who needs the latest macOS.
How does it compare to the newer M1 MacBook Air?
The M1 Air is much faster, has a better keyboard and longer battery life, and still gets current macOS. This 2017 Intel model costs far less but is a step behind in performance and software support.
How is the battery life?
Apple rated it at up to 10 hours. On a used unit expect less, and check the battery cycle count before buying, since a replacement may be needed.
Can I upgrade the RAM or storage?
No. The 8GB of RAM is soldered to the logic board, and the 256GB SSD is not a standard user-replaceable part. Buy the configuration you need up front.
What ports does it have?
It has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. You will need a USB-C hub or adapter for USB-A drives, SD cards or an external display.
What is in the box?
A used listing typically includes the laptop and a USB-C power adapter and cable. Confirm the charger is included before ordering.
What do buyers say about the Apple MacBook Pro Core i5 2.3GHz 8GB RAM 256gb SSD 13 inch Space Gray Mpxt2ll/a?
