Our take on the Apple MacBook Pro (Early 2015) 13-Inch 2.7GHz Core i5 16GB RAM 2TB SSD

The Early 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro is Apple's last Retina model with a full set of ports and a MagSafe charger. This configuration pairs a 2.7GHz dual-core Core i5 with 16GB RAM and a 2TB SSD, well above the stock 8GB/128GB setup. It is a used machine now, so condition and battery health matter more than the badge. The 2TB SSD is a third-party upgrade, not an Apple factory option.

Best forWriters and students who want a reliable keyboard and Retina screenBuyers who need USB-A, HDMI and SD card slots without donglesLight photo and office work on a budgetAnyone who prefers macOS on older, repairable hardware
Pros
  • Retina 2560x1600 display is sharp and color-accurate
  • 16GB RAM and a 2TB SSD are far beyond the stock configuration
  • MagSafe, two USB-A, two Thunderbolt 2, HDMI and SD card slot built in
  • Keyboard and large trackpad still rank among the best on a laptop
  • Battery rated around 12 hours when new; parts and repairs are widely available
Cons
  • Dual-core 2.7GHz i5 is slow by current standards for video and heavy multitasking
  • No longer receives new macOS releases, so some apps and security updates are limited
  • A 2TB SSD in this model is a third-party swap; check the drive brand and health
  • Used units often have worn batteries, so real runtime is well under 12 hours
  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Thunderbolt 2 are dated; no USB-C

Questions and answers

Is the Early 2015 MacBook Pro still worth buying?
Yes for writing, browsing and office work at a low price. Skip it if you need current macOS, USB-C or heavy video editing.
What is the newest macOS it runs?
macOS Monterey (12) is the last supported release. Security updates have ended, so plan accordingly.
Is the 2TB SSD original?
No. Apple sold this model with up to 1TB, so a 2TB drive is a third-party upgrade. Ask for the drive brand and health report.
How is the battery life now?
Apple rated it at up to 12 hours when new. A used unit with an aged battery typically runs 4 to 7 hours; check the cycle count before buying.
What ports does it have?
Two USB-A, two Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, an SD card slot, a headphone jack and MagSafe 2 charging.
When is the best time to buy a used one?
Prices tend to dip after new MacBook launches and during back-to-school sales. Compare listings and factor in a possible battery replacement.
