Our take on the Arlo Ultra Battery Powered Security Camera

The Arlo Ultra is a 4K battery-powered security camera with a 180-degree field of view, color night vision and a built-in spotlight. It works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant and is aimed at homeowners who want sharp detail without wiring. The battery is removable and rechargeable, and the camera needs an Arlo SmartHub or base station to record and stream. It is a premium model, so expect to pay more than for Arlo's 1080p and 2K cameras.

Questions and answers

Is the Arlo Ultra worth it over the Arlo Pro 4?
The Ultra adds 4K resolution, a 180-degree view and a spotlight. The Pro 4 is 2K and cheaper. Choose the Ultra if detail at distance matters; otherwise the Pro 4 saves money.
Does it work without a base station?
No. The Ultra needs an Arlo SmartHub or base station to connect and record. The camera alone will not stream to the app.
How long does the battery last?
Arlo rates the battery for months of typical use, but heavy 4K recording and live viewing shorten that to weeks. A spare battery helps.
What is in the box?
A typical kit includes the camera, a rechargeable battery, a mounting kit and a charging cable. The SmartHub is included only in bundles that list it.
Does it need a subscription?
You get a short free cloud trial. After that, cloud recording and advanced alerts need an Arlo Secure plan; local storage on a SmartHub works without one.
When is it cheapest?
Arlo cameras usually drop during Black Friday, Prime Day and back-to-school sales. Bundles with the SmartHub often cost little more than the camera alone.
What do buyers say about the Arlo Ultra Battery Powered Security Camera?
