Our take on the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X-BK Fully Automatic Belt-Drive Stereo Turntable

The AT-LP60X-BK is Audio-Technica's entry-level fully automatic belt-drive turntable. It plays 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records, starts and stops at the touch of a button, and has a built-in switchable phono preamp so it plugs into powered speakers or a stereo with or without a phono input. It ships with an Audio-Technica Dual Magnet cartridge and a replaceable diamond stylus, and its redesigned tonearm base and headshell aim to improve tracking. It is the standard first-turntable pick, and its price has held steady near the low end of its recent range rather than spiking.

Questions and answers

Is the AT-LP60X worth it for a first turntable?
Yes, for most beginners. It is automatic, includes a cartridge and stylus, and has a built-in preamp, so you can be playing records without extra parts. If you plan to upgrade the tonearm or cartridge later, a manual deck is a better base.
Do I need a receiver or preamp to use it?
No. The built-in switchable phono preamp lets you connect it directly to powered speakers or an aux input. If your stereo has a phono input, switch the preamp off and use that instead.
How does it compare with the older AT-LP60?
The X version has a redesigned tonearm base and headshell for better tracking and less resonance, and the AC adapter was moved outside the chassis to cut noise. The core automatic belt-drive design and cartridge family are the same.
Can I replace the stylus?
Yes. The cartridge is integrated, but the diamond stylus is replaceable, so you swap the stylus rather than the whole cartridge. That keeps long-term wear costs low.
Does it play 45 RPM records?
Yes. It plays both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM, with a speed switch. A 45 adapter for large-hole singles is included.
When is it cheapest?
It is a steady seller, so discounts are modest and tend to appear around Black Friday and holiday sales. Its current price sits near the low end of its recent range, so waiting rarely saves much.
