About the AUTOCHRON MECAQUARTZ
The Autochron Meca-Quartz by Nivada Grenchen is a 38 mm stainless steel chronograph powered by the VK67 meca-quartz movement, combining quartz precision with a smooth sweeping chronograph hand. It has a rotating aluminum bezel with tachymeter scale, a double-domed sapphire crystal and 200 m water resistance.
The design comes from a 1970s Autochron prototype found in the brand's archives. Like the original, the textured black dial carries Art Deco-style subdials, and the fluted bidirectional bezel shows a yellow marker at 12 o'clock.
The VK67 is a hybrid: quartz keeps the time, a mechanical module runs the chronograph, so the hand sweeps and resets instantly. Accuracy is rated at ±20 seconds per month and the battery lasts about three years. More in What is a meca-quartz chronograph?
Using the tachymeter: start the chronograph when a car sets off, stop it after one kilometre or one mile, and read the speed where the seconds hand stops. One kilometre in 30 seconds stops the hand at 120: an average of 120 km/h.
