Our take on the Balsam Hill Fraser Fir Flip Tree

The Balsam Hill Fraser Fir Flip Tree is a 6.5-foot pre-lit artificial Christmas tree with a flip-style stand: the tree stores upside down and flips upright for setup, so you assemble the bottom half once and leave it in the base. It carries 1,150 clear LED lights with Balsam Hill's Twinkly Light Show, which lets you pick colors and patterns from a phone app. It is 54 inches wide, so it needs a generous corner. Balsam Hill's own site lists it at $1,099 as of November 3; that is the only price we have for it, so we can't yet say how it sits against its recent range.

Best forHouseholds that set up and take down a large tree every yearBuyers who want app-controlled light shows without adding strandsRooms with space for a 54-inch-wide treePeople who prefer a realistic fir look over a sparse budget tree
Pros
  • Flip Tree base cuts setup and storage to one heavy lift
  • 1,150 integrated LEDs with Twinkly app control for colors and effects
  • Realistic Fraser Fir foliage in a full 54-inch spread
  • Clear lights work for classic decorating; the app adds color on demand
Cons
  • $1,099 at Balsam Hill as of November 3 is a premium price
  • 6.5 ft and 54 in wide is a lot of tree for small rooms
  • Flip mechanism and light controller add failure points versus a plain tree
  • Faux tree, so no real fir scent

Questions and answers

Is the Balsam Hill Fraser Fir Flip Tree worth it?
If you put up a large tree every year and want app-controlled lights, the flip base saves real time and the foliage looks full. At $1,099 at Balsam Hill as of November 3, it only pays off if you keep it for many seasons.
How does the Flip Tree setup work?
The tree stores upside down in its stand. You tip it upright, then add the top sections, so the bottom half stays assembled year to year.
Do I need the app to use the lights?
No. The clear LEDs work with a standard controller, and the Twinkly app is only needed for color changes and light-show patterns.
How big is it, and will it fit my room?
It is 6.5 feet tall and 54 inches wide at the base. Leave several feet of clearance around it and check your ceiling height before buying.
What comes in the box?
The tree sections, the flip stand and base, the light controller, and setup instructions. Ornaments and a tree skirt are not included.
When is it cheapest?
Balsam Hill discounts trees most around Labor Day and early November, and again after Christmas. We only have the $1,099 Balsam Hill price as of November 3, so compare before you buy.
What do buyers say about the Balsam Hill Fraser Fir Flip Tree?
