Is this set enough to carve a spoon from start to finish?

Not quite. The sloyd knife roughs out the shape and the detail knife refines it, but hollowing the bowl needs a hook knife or gouge, which this set does not include.

Do the knives come sharp?

Yes. BeaverCraft ships them sharpened, and the included leather strop lets you keep the edges honed.

How do I keep the blades from rusting?

Dry them after every use and wipe on a light coat of oil. High-carbon steel rusts quickly if left damp.

Three knives (whittling/sloyd, detail and chip carving) and a leather honing strop. Check the listing for whether strop compound is included.

Is this a good set for a beginner?

Yes. It is inexpensive, ready to use and covers the main carving cuts, so it suits a first kit before you add a hook knife.
