Is the Bombshelter worth it over a double-wall expedition tent?

It saves weight and pitches faster, but you give up the inner wall that manages condensation. For cold, windy alpine use the trade is usually worth it; for wet, humid trips a double-wall tent is drier.

How many people does it sleep?

Four, on a 4.6 m² floor that is 203 cm wide and 371 cm long. Four adults fit, though it is tight with large packs inside.

Does it come with a footprint?

No. The ground cloth is a compatible accessory sold separately, which is worth adding for snow and rough ground.

How does it handle snow?

The steep dome and four interior poles shed snow and wind well, and it is built for expedition use. You still need to clear heavy accumulation during storms.

Is it usable in summer?

It can be, but the single wall has no mesh inner, so ventilation and bug protection are limited. It is designed for cold and exposed conditions.

Our take on the Black Diamond Bombshelter Tent

The Bombshelter is Black Diamond's four-person, four-season expedition dome built from single-wall ToddTex fabric. Four interior poles and a low, wind-shedding dome shape make it a shelter for high camps and snow load rather than summer camping. It sleeps four, has two doors and two end vestibules, and weighs 3.99 kg (8.8 lb) minimum, 4.42 kg (9.7 lb) packed. The best new price is $909.96 at Backcountry.com as of November 7, 2026, the only new listing found.

Best forMountaineers and alpine expeditionsFour-person high-camp base campsCold, windy and snowy conditionsTeams that want a single-wall tent with two exits

Pros

Single-wall ToddTex construction cuts weight and setup versus a double-wall tent
Dome with four interior poles sheds wind well
Two doors and two end vestibules give each pair a separate entry and gear space
Sleeps four with 4.6 m² floor area and 112 cm peak height
Pitches as one unit, so it goes up fast in bad weather

Cons

Heavy for a single-wall four-person tent at 3.99 kg minimum
Single wall means more condensation inside in cold, still conditions
Only one new listing found, so there is little price competition
No inner tent, so no mesh bug protection for warm-weather use
Ground cloth sold separately
