Our take on the Board Game Splendor

Splendor is a competitive card game for 2 to 4 players set in Renaissance Europe. Players collect gem tokens, buy development cards and attract nobles, racing to 15 prestige points in about 30 minutes. It is a light rules set with real strategic depth, which is why it works for both beginners and seasoned gamers. The game is widely available and often discounted, so its price swings with sales and editions.

  • Fast 30-minute games that keep a table moving
  • Strong strategic depth despite simple rules
  • Scales well from 2 players to 4
  • Compact box that travels easily
Cons
  • Theme is thin; it is mostly an abstract engine-building game
  • Little player interaction beyond taking cards others want
  • Luck of the card row can decide close games
  • Plastic gem tokens feel less premium than chips

Questions and answers

Is Splendor worth it for a beginner?
Yes. The rules take a few minutes to teach, and the gem colors and card costs are easy to read. Most new players understand the game after one round.
How many players can play Splendor?
Two to four players. It plays well at two, though the card row is tighter and more tactical with three or four.
How long does a game of Splendor take?
About 30 minutes. Games with four players can run a little longer, but it rarely drags.
Is Splendor good for kids?
The box recommends ages 12 and up, but many families play with kids around 8 to 10 who can handle simple arithmetic. Younger kids may need help counting gem costs.
What is in the Splendor box?
Gem tokens, development cards in three tiers, noble tiles and the rulebook. It is a complete standalone game, not an expansion.
When is Splendor cheapest?
Prices drop during major sales events and holiday promotions. Watch the price history and buy when it falls below its usual range.
