Is the Breville Smart Scoop worth it over a cheaper freezer-bowl maker?

If you make ice cream regularly, yes. The compressor removes the 12- to 24-hour bowl freeze and lets you churn back-to-back batches. For occasional use, a freezer-bowl machine costs much less.

How much ice cream does one batch make?

About 1.1 qt, roughly 6 to 8 scoops. That suits a small household; larger families will want two batches.

Do I need to freeze the bowl before use?

No. The bowl is cooled by the built-in compressor, so you can churn as soon as the machine is cold.

The machine, a removable bowl, a removable paddle and a cleaning brush.

Can it keep ice cream frozen after churning?

It holds the finished batch cold for up to 3 hours on keep-cool, but it is not a freezer for long-term storage.

The compressor is audible through a batch, comparable to a refrigerator running. It is not silent, so plan around it in open kitchens.

Our take on the Breville Smart Scoop Ice Cream Maker BCI600XL

The Breville Smart Scoop BCI600XL is a compressor ice cream maker with a built-in freezer, so you don't pre-freeze a bowl. Its 12 hardness settings let you stop churning at soft-serve or firm scoop texture, and four presets cover ice cream, gelato, sorbet and frozen yogurt. The bowl holds 1.1 qt, and a keep-cool mode holds the finished batch for up to 3 hours. It is a heavy, counter-hogging machine at about 31 lbs and 16 inches deep.
