Our take on the Brompton Electric C Line Explore Folding Bike

The Brompton Electric C Line Explore is a steel-framed folding bike with a 250W front-hub motor and a 300Wh battery in a removable front bag. It folds to roughly the size of a large suitcase in about 20 seconds, which makes it the most compact e-bike you can take on trains and into offices. The 4-speed drivetrain and 16-inch wheels suit city riding rather than hills or long distances. It is a premium buy, and prices move little between stores, so check the price history before ordering.

Apartment dwellers with no storage space
Riders who need to carry a bike upstairs or into an office
Short urban trips of 5 to 15 miles
Pros

  • Removable battery bag doubles as a carry bag
  • Steel frame rides smoothly and holds up over years
  • Motor assist is smooth and quiet in city traffic
  • Holds resale value better than most e-bikes
Cons
  • Heavy for its size, around 38 lb with the battery bag
  • 16-inch wheels and 4 speeds struggle on steep hills
  • Expensive next to full-size commuter e-bikes
  • Battery bag adds bulk when carried off the bike
  • Proprietary parts mean dealer service

Questions and answers

Is the Brompton Electric worth it over the non-electric C Line?
If your commute has hills, headwinds or you arrive sweaty, the motor earns its price. On flat, short rides the standard C Line is lighter and much cheaper.
What is the range on one charge?
Brompton rates it at roughly 20 to 45 miles depending on mode and terrain. Real-world city riders in low assist often see the upper end.
Can I take it on a plane or train?
Trains and buses generally accept it folded. The 300Wh battery is under the common 160Wh carry-on limit only if split, so check airline rules before flying.
How long does it take to fold?
About 20 seconds once practiced. The battery bag comes off first, then the frame folds into a package roughly 23 x 22 x 10 inches.
What comes in the box?
The bike, the front battery bag with charger, and a toolkit. Lights and a rear rack are not included on the base Explore.
When is it cheapest?
Brompton discounts are rare; the best prices usually appear in late-year sales and on prior-year colors. Watch the price history rather than buying on impulse.
