Our take on the BUK OPS Cycloptic Handheld Prime Viewer

The BUK OPS Cycloptic is a handheld digital night vision monocular with a 25mm objective lens, 1-5x variable zoom and an adjustable IR illuminator. It records 4K video to a MicroSD card and shows the image on a 1.39-inch HD viewfinder, with a black-and-white night mode plus a color mode for daylight. It runs on two CR123 batteries, which are not included. No current price or recent price range was supplied, so check the live comparison before buying.

Pros
  • 1-5x variable zoom covers wide scanning and close-up viewing
  • Adjustable IR illuminator extends usable range in full dark
  • Records 4K video to MicroSD for later review
  • 25mm objective and 52-degree field of view give a reasonably wide view
  • Handheld monocular design is simple to carry and use
Cons
  • Digital night vision, not thermal, so it needs some light or the IR torch
  • Two CR123 batteries are not included and add running cost
  • 1.39-inch viewfinder is small for long viewing sessions
  • No stated water or fog resistance rating
  • Unlimited eye relief claim is marketing language, not a measured spec

Questions and answers

Is this real night vision or thermal?
It is digital black-and-white night vision with an IR illuminator, not thermal. It sees in near-darkness with the IR torch on, but it cannot detect body heat through total cover like a thermal unit.
What batteries does it take and are they included?
It runs on two CR123 batteries, and they are not included. Buy spares, since the IR illuminator and 4K recording both draw power.
Can I record video and where does it save?
Yes, it records 4K video to a MicroSD card through the card slot. You need to supply the card yourself.
How far can it see at night?
BUK OPS does not publish a range figure. Usable distance depends on ambient light and the IR torch setting; expect the clearest results on nearby subjects within the IR beam.
Is the zoom optical or digital?
The 1-5x magnification is digital zoom on the sensor image. Image detail softens as you push toward 5x, so use the low end for the sharpest view.
When is the best time to buy it?
Optics and night vision gear usually see discounts around Black Friday and hunting-season sales. Check the price history on this page to see whether the current price is above or below its usual range.
