Our take on the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens

The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is Canon's pro telephoto zoom for EOS R mirrorless bodies, covering sports, events and portraits at a constant f/2.8. It is unusually short and light for its class at 146 mm long and 89.9 mm wide, with 5-stop-class optical stabilization, weather sealing and a tripod collar in the box. The best new price is $2,699 at Adorama as of November 3, 2026, with 6 stores listing it new. That sits at the top of its recent range, so it is not a discount moment.

Best forSports and action shooters who need f/2.8 and fast autofocusWedding and event photographers working in low lightPortrait shooters who want compressed backgroundsEOS R owners who want one do-it-all telephoto
Pros
  • Constant f/2.8 across the whole zoom range
  • Short and light for a 70-200mm f/2.8: 146 mm long, 89.9 mm wide
  • Optical image stabilization plus internal focusing
  • Weather-sealed L build with 11 aperture blades
  • Works with Canon RF teleconverters
  • Tripod collar and lens hood included
Cons
  • $2,699 is a lot for a single lens
  • Extends when zooming, unlike the internal-zoom EF version
  • Minimum focus distance of 0.7 m is not close-focusing
  • No built-in control ring detents; some prefer the EF mount's handling
  • Heavy on smaller bodies like the R8 or RP

Questions and answers

Is the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 worth it over the f/4 version?
Yes if you shoot indoor sports, events or portraits in low light; the extra stop gives faster shutter speeds and shallower depth of field. The f/4 is lighter and cheaper if you mostly shoot outdoors in daylight.
Does it work with Canon RF teleconverters?
Yes, it accepts the RF 1.4x and 2x extenders, giving 98-280mm f/4 or 140-400mm f/5.6. Autofocus and stabilization keep working, though sharpness drops slightly with the 2x.
How does it compare with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8?
The RF version is much shorter and lighter and needs no adapter on EOS R bodies. The EF version zooms internally and is cheaper used, but it is bigger and heavier on a mirrorless camera.
Is it stabilized?
Yes, it has optical image stabilization that pairs with in-body stabilization on newer EOS R bodies. That helps handheld shots at slow shutter speeds.
What is in the box?
The lens, front and rear caps, the lens hood and a tripod collar. A case and strap are not included.
When is it cheapest?
It rarely drops far below list; the best new price was $2,699 at Adorama as of November 3, 2026. Watch for Canon refurbished sales and holiday bundles if you want a lower price.
Where is the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens cheapest?
