Our take on the Caterpillar 305.5 CR Mini Excavator

The Cat 305.5 CR is a 5.5-ton class compact-radius mini excavator with a 45 hp C1.7 turbo diesel and a 14 ft 4 in maximum dig depth. Its zero-tail-swing-style compact radius lets it work against walls and in tight lots where a conventional excavator cannot swing. Operating weight is about 12,688 lb, so it needs a sizable trailer and tow vehicle. The best new price is $86,500 at Rubbl as of November 4, 2026, with only one store listing it new.

Questions and answers

Is the Cat 305.5 CR worth $86,500?
For a crew that bills machine hours in tight sites, the compact radius and Cat support can justify it. Compare against used units and other 5-ton compact-radius models before committing.
How does it compare with a conventional 305.5?
The CR version trades some stability and lift capacity for a tighter swing radius. Choose it when working against walls or in narrow lanes matters more than maximum reach.
What can it dig?
Maximum dig depth is 144.5 in (3,670 mm). That suits utility trenches, footings and landscaping work; it is not a replacement for a larger excavator on deep mainline trenching.
Can I tow it with a pickup?
At 12,688 lb operating weight, no half-ton pickup will do it. Plan on a heavy-duty trailer and a truck rated for the combined load.
What is included at this price?
The listing does not detail attachments, cab or bucket. Confirm what comes with the machine, and whether a thumb, quick coupler or extra buckets are included, before buying.
When is the best time to buy?
Compact excavator pricing moves with dealer promotions and year-end inventory. Watch the price history and ask for quotes from multiple Cat dealers.
Where is the Caterpillar 305.5 CR Mini Excavator cheapest?
