Our take on the City Furniture Optimus Black Leather/Vinyl Power Recliner

The Optimus is a single-seat power recliner from City Furniture, upholstered in black leather with vinyl on the sides and back. It has an attached foam-and-fiber back, a sinuous spring seat, two cup holders and one USB port, and it reclines with a button rather than a lever. It ships unassembled, so expect to attach the back and legs. No current price was provided, so compare the latest quote against its own recent range before buying.

Best forLiving room or media room seatingBuyers who want a powered recline without a full sofa set
People who keep a drink and a phone within reach
Households wanting wipe-clean black upholstery
Pros
  • Power recline is easier on the arms and back than a manual lever
  • Two cup holders and a USB port built into the arm
  • Leather seating surface with vinyl on lower-wear panels keeps cost down
  • Attached back and seat cushions stay in place
  • Sinuous spring seating gives even support across the seat
Cons
  • Ships unassembled; back and legs need fitting
  • Engineered wood frame is lighter-duty than hardwood
  • Only one USB port for a chair with two cup holders
  • Leather/vinyl mix needs water-based cleaners only; solvents can damage it
  • Single seat, so it does not match a sectional on its own

Questions and answers

Is the Optimus power recliner worth it?
It is a reasonable pick if you want powered recline, cup holders and a USB port in one black chair. Check the current price against its recent range and sit in one first if you can, since seat feel is personal.
How does it compare with a manual recliner?
The power mechanism reclines at the touch of a button and holds position without pushing back with your legs. Manual chairs cost less and have fewer electronics to fail, but are harder to operate for some people.
Does it need assembly?
Yes. The chair ships unassembled, so plan on attaching the back and the legs. Two people make it easier, and you will need to route the power cord to a nearby outlet.
What are the dimensions and weight capacity?
Those figures were not included with this listing. Confirm seat height, reclined depth and weight limit with City Furniture before buying, since a power recliner needs clearance behind it to fully recline.
How should I clean the leather and vinyl?
Use water-based cleaning agents only, as the maker specifies. Avoid solvent or alcohol cleaners, which can dry out or discolor the vinyl panels.
When is it cheapest?
City Furniture runs recliner promotions around major holiday sales and clearance events. Track the price history here and buy when the quote drops below its usual range.
