Our take on the City Track 74-Piece Train Set

The City Track 74-Piece Train Set is a battery-operated toy train with DIY snap-together track pieces, aimed at young children who like building layouts as much as running the train. The 74-piece count gives it more track and accessories than most starter sets, so layouts can be rebuilt rather than fixed. It is a generic, budget-tier set rather than a licensed or hobby-grade model. No current price was available to compare against its recent range.

Best forPreschool and early elementary kidsParents wanting a build-and-play toy under one box
Gift for a child new to train sets
Families who want a set that packs away and rebuilds
Pros
  • 74 pieces allow several different layouts
  • Battery operation means no cords or special track power
  • Snap-together assembly suits small hands
  • Building layouts adds a creative, open-ended element
  • Simple enough for independent play after a first build
Cons
  • Battery-powered train is slower and weaker than hobby sets
  • Plastic track joints can loosen with rough handling
  • No expansion track packs confirmed, so layouts are capped at 74 pieces
  • Generic brand means parts and replacements are harder to find
  • Not compatible with wooden or name-brand track systems

Questions and answers

Is it worth it compared with a wooden train set?
It costs less and includes more pieces, but wooden sets last longer and take standard expansion track. Choose this for a cheap first set; choose wood if the child will keep playing for years.
What batteries does the train need?
Most sets in this class run on AA batteries, usually not included. Check the box before buying so the train works on the first day.
Can I add more track later?
Only if the seller offers matching expansion packs for this exact system. The pieces are unlikely to fit wooden or other brand track.
What age is it for?
Best for roughly ages 3 to 6. Small connectors make it unsuitable for children still putting things in their mouths.
How big is a finished layout?
With 74 pieces you can build a loop or figure-eight plus a few sidings, roughly the size of a small rug. It is not a floor-filling layout.
When is it cheapest?
Toy train sets usually drop around Black Friday and in the weeks before Christmas. Buy outside November and December if you are not gift-dating it.
