Is the Cobra RX680 worth it?

For casual family and outdoor use, yes. At $89.95 for a pair at Best Buy as of November 3, 2026, it covers weather alerts, VOX and a flashlight at a low price per radio.

Do I need an FCC license for the RX680?

No. It operates on FRS channels, which do not require a license. The GMRS channels some listings mention are not usable without a license, so stick to FRS.

What is the real range?

Expect roughly half a mile to 2 miles in neighborhoods or woods, and more only over open water or flat terrain. The 38-mile figure assumes ideal line-of-sight conditions.

It is IP54 rated, which means splash and dust resistant. It can handle rain but should not be dropped in water or submerged.

What comes in the box?

A pair of RX680 radios. Check the listing for whether belt clips and charging accessories are included, since bundle contents vary by seller.

Two-way radio prices drop around Black Friday and before summer camping season. The current $89.95 is already near the low end of its recent range.
