Our take on the Cold Steel Bird and Game Fixed Knife

The Cold Steel Bird and Game is a small fixed-blade knife built for cleaning birds and small game. It has a 5-inch Japanese AUS8A stainless drop-point blade, a full tang, and a light 1.4 oz polymer handle. The Secure-Ex sheath is included. At $17.24 at MidwayUSA as of November 5, 2026, it sits at the low end of its recent price range, so this is a good time to buy.

Best forHunters cleaning birds and small gameCampers who want a light fixed bladeBuyers who want a full-tang knife under $25Field dressing and delicate cutting tasks
Pros
  • Full tang adds strength for a knife this light
  • AUS8A stainless holds a decent edge and resists rust
  • 5-inch drop point is well sized for breasting birds and small game
  • Only 1.4 oz, so it disappears on a belt or in a pack
  • Secure-Ex sheath included at a low price
Cons
  • AUS8A is a mid-grade steel; it dulls faster than premium steels
  • Satin finish shows scratches with hard use
  • Polymer handle feels basic and offers little grip texture
  • Not suited to heavy chopping or batoning
