Is the Coleman 800 Lumens LED Lantern worth it?

Yes for a basic, tough camping lantern. It is bright, simple and drop-resistant, and BatteryGuard helps batteries survive storage. If you want rechargeable power or a USB port, look at other models.

How long do the batteries last?

Runtime depends on brightness setting and battery quality. Expect many hours on low and far fewer on high with good alkaline D cells. BatteryGuard stops the slow drain that happens when a lantern sits unused.

Does it come with batteries?

No. It takes three D-cell alkaline batteries, sold separately. Buy a pack before your first trip.

How does it compare with the Coleman 600-lumen lantern?

This model is brighter and adds BatteryGuard. The 600-lumen version is smaller and lighter but gives up some output and battery protection.

It is built for camping and light rain, but it is not rated for submersion. Keep it out of standing water and bring it inside in heavy storms.

Prices tend to dip during spring camping sales, Black Friday and end-of-summer clearance. Watch the price history and buy when it falls below its usual range.

Our take on the Coleman 800 Lumens LED Lantern with BatteryGuard

The Coleman 800 Lumens LED Lantern is a battery-powered camping and emergency lantern that runs on three D-cell batteries and puts out up to 800 lumens of warm light. Its BatteryGuard feature cuts battery drain when the lantern is off, so stored batteries last longer between trips. The impact-resistant body survives drops up to 2 meters onto dirt, and the tabletop base lets it stand on a picnic table or tent floor. It ships without batteries, so factor in the cost of three D cells.
