Our take on the Conté à Paris Sketching Wood Box Set

The Conté à Paris Sketching Wood Box Set is a 12-piece sketching kit in a bamboo wood box, built around Conté's square pastel sticks and sketch pencils. The square pastel shape lets you draw a fine edge or a broad stroke without sharpening, and the pastels are colour-fast. It is aimed at adult artists doing sketches and portraits rather than beginners. The set is compact at 23.5 x 16.5 x 4 cm, so it travels well.

Questions and answers

Is this set worth it for a beginner?
It is aimed at artists, and 12 pieces leaves little room for error. A beginner is better off with a larger, cheaper soft-pastel set before spending on Conté.
How does it compare with Conté's larger sketching sets?
Larger Conté sets add more pastel colours and pencils. This 12-piece box is the compact travel option, so choose it for portability rather than range.
What is in the box?
The set includes square pastel sticks and sketch pencils in a bamboo wood box. Count the pieces on arrival, since the listing describes 12 pieces total.
Are the pastels easy to sharpen?
No. Square pastels are meant to be used on their edges and corners rather than sharpened, which is part of their appeal for detail work.
When is the best time to buy it?
Art supply prices dip during back-to-school and holiday sales. Check the price history before buying, since set prices move less than single sticks.
Can I replace individual pastels?
Conté sells pastels in open stock, but matching the exact shades in this box can be hit or miss. Expect to buy a separate stick if one wears out.
What do buyers say about the Conté à Paris Sketching Wood Box Set?
Rated 4.7 out of 5 from 6 ratings.
