Our take on the Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike

The Dahon Mariner D8 is a 20-inch folding commuter bike with an aluminum frame, a steel fork and an 8-speed drivetrain. It folds to about 32.6 x 14 x 26.4 inches and weighs 27.8 lbs, so it fits in a trunk or on a train but is not a featherweight carry. Slick 20 x 1.5 CST tires suit pavement and bike paths, and the frame is rated for riders up to 231 lbs. The best new price is $663.17 at Peach Frog as of November 4, 2026, from a single store listing.

Best for
City commuters who mix riding with trains or buses
Apartment dwellers with limited storage space
Riders who want a simple 8-speed folding bike
Beginners and casual riders
Pros
  • Aluminum frame keeps rust risk low and weight at 27.8 lbs
  • Folds small enough for a car trunk or closet
  • 8 speeds handle mild hills and headwinds
  • 20-inch wheels roll more smoothly than 16-inch folders
  • Rated for riders up to 231 lbs
Cons
  • Rigid frame and fork pass road bumps straight to the rider
  • Steel fork adds weight and can rust if paint chips
  • 27.8 lbs is heavy to carry up stairs regularly
  • Slick tires are poor on gravel or wet dirt
  • Only one store lists it new, so price competition is thin

Questions and answers

Is the Dahon Mariner D8 worth it for commuting?
Yes, if your commute is mostly paved and you need to fold the bike for a train, bus or small apartment. At $663.17 at Peach Frog as of November 4, 2026, it is a reasonable price for an aluminum 8-speed folder, but only one store lists it new, so compare before buying.
How small does it fold?
Folded, it measures about 32.6 x 14 x 26.4 inches. That fits in most car trunks and closets, but check your train or office storage rules.
Is it good for hills?
The 8-speed gearing covers moderate hills and headwinds. Steep climbs will be harder than on a lighter bike, given the 27.8 lb weight.
Can it handle gravel or rough roads?
Not well. The slick 20 x 1.5 tires and rigid frame are meant for pavement and bike paths. Gravel and potholes will feel harsh.
What is the weight limit?
Dahon rates the frame for riders up to 231 lbs.
When is it cheapest?
Folding bikes tend to discount in late fall and winter, outside commuting season. The current best new price is $663.17 at Peach Frog as of November 4, 2026.
Where is the Dahon Mariner D8 Folding Bike cheapest?
At Peach Frog, for $663.17, as of our latest check.
