Our take on the Dell OptiPlex 3020 Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM, 2TB HD, Windows 10 Home

The OptiPlex 3020 is a small business desktop from around 2014, sold here with a 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a 2TB hard drive. It is a refurbished-class machine: no dedicated graphics, a DVD-ROM drive and Windows 10 Home. Its appeal is price and upgradeability, not speed. The 16GB ceiling on RAM is already reached, so there is no memory headroom left.

  • Small tower footprint at about 13 lbs
Cons
  • DDR3 memory is old and already maxed at 16GB

  • Windows 10 Home is out of support since October 2025

Questions and answers

Is the OptiPlex 3020 still worth buying?
Only as a cheap basic machine. For web, email and documents it works, but the hard drive and out-of-support Windows 10 hold it back. Expect to add an SSD.
Can I upgrade the RAM beyond 16GB?
No. The board caps at 16GB of DDR3, and this listing already has the maximum installed.
Does it have an SSD?
No. It ships with a 2TB mechanical hard drive. Swapping in a 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the single biggest speed improvement you can make.
Can it run Windows 11?
Officially no. The 4th-generation Core i5 is not on Microsoft's supported processor list, so Windows 11 needs an unsupported install and gets no guaranteed updates.
What is in the box?
Typically the desktop, power cable and a keyboard and mouse, depending on the seller. A monitor is not included despite the LCD and resolution fields in the listing.
When is it cheapest?
Prices on refurbished business desktops drift down over time and dip during clearance sales. Check the price history before buying.
