Our take on the DeWalt 20V MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless Combo Kit with 5/8 in. Hammer Drill and FLEXVOLT 6Ah

This is a three-piece DeWalt 20V MAX cordless kit built around a brushless 5/8 in. hammer drill, paired with a FLEXVOLT 6Ah battery and a second battery. Brushless motors run cooler and last longer than brushed ones, and the FLEXVOLT pack works across DeWalt's 20V MAX and 60V MAX lines. It suits buyers starting a cordless platform or replacing a worn drill. No price was given for this listing, so compare the kit price against buying the drill and batteries separately.

Best forHomeowners and DIYers who want one drill kit for wood, metal and masonryBuyers already on the DeWalt 20V MAX battery platformAnyone who wants a high-capacity FLEXVOLT battery for heavier tools
Pros
  • Brushless hammer drill handles drilling and light masonry
  • FLEXVOLT 6Ah battery works in 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools
  • Two batteries keep one charging while the other runs
  • Shared 20V MAX platform covers a large range of tools
Cons
  • Only three pieces, so it is a starter kit rather than a full set
  • 6Ah FLEXVOLT packs add weight to a hand-held drill
  • No price shown here, so value against bare-tool prices is unclear
  • Hammer mode is light-duty, not a substitute for a rotary hammer

Questions and answers

Is this kit worth it over buying the drill alone?
It depends on the price. A bare drill plus one 6Ah FLEXVOLT battery often costs close to the kit, so the kit wins if you need two batteries. Compare the kit price with the bare-tool price before deciding.
Does the FLEXVOLT battery work in other DeWalt tools?
Yes. FLEXVOLT batteries run in 20V MAX tools at 20 volts and in 60V MAX tools at 60 volts. That makes it a useful bridge between both lines.
Can the hammer drill handle concrete?
It drills small holes in masonry with carbide bits. For repeated or large holes in concrete, a dedicated rotary hammer is the better tool.
What is in the box?
The kit is listed as three pieces: the 5/8 in. brushless hammer drill, a FLEXVOLT 6Ah battery and a second battery. Check the listing for the charger and bag, since bundles vary.
When is this kit cheapest?
DeWalt kits usually drop during Black Friday, Father's Day and end-of-season sales. Track the price history and buy when it sits near the low end of its recent range.
